What do consumers care about, and what should retailers be doing to meet their sustainability priorities? To answer these questions, we surveyed 9,000 consumers across the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Sweden, Denmark, and Spain to gather their perspectives.
Consumers Are Avoiding Retailers with a Negative Impact
- 71% of consumers say they avoid retailers they believe have a negative impact on the environment.

- More than half of consumers (54%) say they are more likely to buy from a retailer that has a clear plan for how it will reduce its environmental impact.

Consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable products, but only up to a certain point. 57% say they are willing to pay up to 10% more for sustainable products, but only 17% are willing to pay more than that.

Some retailers are already making progress. Apparel retailers are leading the way, with 70% offering sustainable returns options, compared to 60% of grocers and 55% of B2B retailers.

METHODOLOGY
Publicis Sapient surveyed 9,000 consumers across 9 countries in 2023 to ask about their attitudes toward shopping sustainably. The survey was conducted online in the US, UK, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Sweden, Denmark, and Spain. The sample was nationally representative of each country by age and gender. The survey was conducted in partnership with YouGov.
